A Texas senator has introduced legislation that would arm certain officials in the public school system. Steve Stockman introduced the Safe Schools Act, which is also known as H.R. 35 earlier this month. The act would allow security guards and other officials who work in schools to be armed in order to protect the children that attend classes there.
Stockman introduced the bill because he feels that the current laws do little to protect school children and in fact may even put them in danger. That’s because in 1996, the federal government enacted gun free school zones. Since that time there have been 10 mass school shootings in this country.
In introducing his bill, Stockman remarked “In the 22 years before enactment of gun free school zones there were two mass school shootings. In the 22 years since enactment of gun free school zones, there have been 10 mass school shootings. Not only has the bill utterly failed to protect our children, it appears to have placed them in danger.
Gun Owners of America, an activist group dedicated to preserving Second Amendment rights, supports this bill. They encourage people around the country to contact their congressional representative and ask them to vote for this legislation. They feel this is an important measure to take regarding the safety of our children while at school.
Violating a gun law is serious business. Those who are accused of an infraction involving the use of firearms may need assistance from a criminal defense attorney even if there were no injuries that resulted from an illegal act.
